What's With The Name?
Okay, we had quite a number of name suggestions on the old Cletus the Fetus webpage. Many good suggestions, many not as good. While I was pushing for Voltar Martin and MiniMe, logic reared it's ugly head and made us act sensibly. Amy and I kept the name to ourselves for good reason. We didn't want to be dissuaded from choosing a name that we really liked. The final choice, John Hillard Martin, made the final cut because we liked the way it sounded. For those needing more rationale than that, there is a good deal of historical significance to Mancub's given names.
John is a strong name, one of the apostles, the Baptist, and inspiration of the people in the end zones who hold up their handmade signs. The family significance comes from Amy's family and my family. Johann Tiemann was the first Tiemann to come to America from Germany back in the late 1800's. John Adams Martin is the second Martin name we have on record. He was born in Pike County, Alabama in 1800.
It took us a while at Barnes and Nobles to find Hillard in any baby book. The two we found said that it is of German decent and means something to the effect of conqueror, warrior, strong and brave. I'll clear that up in a later update to this page. Hillard was also the middle name of Henry Hillard Martin born 1841, son of the aforementioned John Adams Martin. In 1862, Private Henry Hillard Martin took part in the Seven Day Siege at Richmond, VA and later fought and was captured at Gettysburg.
This name came with the family. Little is known about the first Martin of record. We only know that in 1776, this Martin man was born and that he had a son named John Adams Martin in 1800.
The historical ties to these names gives us great pride. As I get corrected on mistakes in our facts or as we are given more significant historical data, I will update these pages and give a more complete version of our family history and significance of these names.
